The Amelia Johnson Reading Circle grew out of the Howard Thurman Book Club which was founded in the fall of 1982 under the sponsorship of the Cultural Arts Committee. It was organized as yet another activity for the enrichment of the cultural life of the Church. 

The Amelia Johnson Reading Circle name was adopted in 2009 to honor the work of the 5th First Lady of Union Baptist Church who was an accomplished African American writer during the early 1900's.

Each year, the members sponsor a “Meet the Author Dinner” featuring as a guest speaker an outstanding writer. All are open to the public. We take this opportunity to invite you to join us.
